A Word On Home Safety
I often assess patients who have had a history of repeated falls. By placing the patient on a scheduled self feeding, bowel and bladder program, certain issues such as incontinence and blood sugar issues that contribute to falls are immediately addressed.
Our home safety program teaches patients compensatory skills to meet the challenges of a chaotic environment. Studies show that 90% of falls occur during an ADL (Activity of Daily Living Skills) since life does not occur in a vacuum, patients must acquire the proper skills to function safely during normal tasks.
The ideal patient environment is clear pathways but that is not always the case. By dissecting each component of a task to find the patients weakness and work on precursor activities or exercise, our therapists can teach patients new skills and build core strength.
Instructing patients in proper body mechanics to maneuver over and around objects and in tight areas safely or to compensate for balance issues during ADL or transfers is key to challenge the patients skills and safely increase independence during functional mobility training.
"Our primary goal is to make sure patients are safe at home while performing their ADL Skills."
